My Acne Story & How I Treated It Naturally?

If you are some one who is dealing with acne , depression caused by acne and scars, This post is for you! So here is my acne story and how I treated it.

A year after my pregnancy that’s exactly when my daughter turned one I got my first periods after pregnancy, that’s when my skin started changing. It was ravaged by cystic acne, dryness and flakiness. 

As a blogger this affected me a lot ! I had no idea how to treat my acne as I was exclusively breastfeeding my daughter.

I tried different skincare products from drugstore products like Vichy, Neutrogena & cetaphil to high end products like Chanel, clarins, Clinique & lush. All this just gave me temporary solutions. The pressure of blogging , doing makeup looks, videos and attending events pushed me to depression and anxiety! I totally avoided attending events to avoid unwanted judgments for my acne and skin. I still remember a blogger saying me to try something else than beauty blogging because I don’t have a face for it. The depression was real! I started caking up my face with lots and lots of make up which worsened my acne situation.

I thought of getting a chemical peel done but being a breastfeeding mother i decided not to try anything which can harm my baby. I consulted a dermatologist and was prescribed birth control pills which again could cause harm to my baby.

I almost gave up! I used to try natural remedies at home and shared the one which gave me results with my followers and on my blog.

Then I decided to gain more knowledge about how our skin works, I started reading more books about skincare and know my skin better before applying or intaking anything to treat my acne. I decided to learn more about skin and then share any DIY’s or beauty tips on my blog.

So here is how I treated my acne prone skin and scars by making few shifts in my lifestyle.

  • Stopped stressing about my acne and how my skin looks. More stress more active sebaceous glands & more acne. I remember once I walked into Dubai mall with out any makeup showing my bare face, not caring about what people will think! 
  • Started on healthy diet

This one is important, yes! What you consume has huge role in how your skin is. I started on well balanced anti oxidant diet and avoided processed carbs & sweets! Included more fruits, vegetables and healthy sources of proteins. Added moringa powder in my morning drink! Trust me moringa works wonders! Consuming sugar causes huge harm to your over all health! I stopped having chocolates & Desserts, unfollowed all the food pages on instagram which would trigger sugar cravings. when ever I felt like having desserts I used to munch on fruits, sweet potatoes & dark chocolates. 

Avoid Sugar for a week and thank me later!

  • Did Yoga

  • Followed a proper skin care routine

This was the hardest part because I had to find something which worked best for me.

I sticked to all natural, Ayurvedic & organic brands, tried out different brands like Juicy chemistry, Just herbs, Kama Ayurveda & Forest Essentials.

I followed a very simple CTM ( Cleanse, Tone & Moisturize) Routine.

For cleansing I opted for a face wash which cleansed out excess oil without causing moisture loss! Forest Essentials Delicate Facial Cleanser Saffron & Neem

I made sure I never skipped toning my skin and the best toner which worked for me is rose water.  Don’t ever go for the Dabur Gulab jal, always buy distilled and all natural rose water. 

Moisturizing your skin is an important step and most of us skip thinking that oily skin doesn’t need to be moisturized! Oily skin needs hydration, always go for a moisturizing light weight lotion than a cream. My holy grail and current favorite is Forest Essentials Light Day Lotion Lavender & Neroli.

  • I tried to hit bed early and get proper sleep

Disturbed sleep cycle results in increased cortisol levels which can lead to acne breakouts and inflammations, So make sure you get enough snooze time.

  • Followed a Night time skin care routine

A good night cream can do wonders in treating acne and scars. Here are few night creams which worked on my oily skin

  • I started using a sunscreen

I usually got acnes whenever I used sunscreen and I started skipping it! Its very important to wear sunscreen even if you are prone to acne and breakouts. Its the wrong kind of sunscreen which clogs your pores and leads to breakouts. Always go for sunscreen with ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

My favorite sunscreens

  1. Curatio Suncote Gel
  2. Forest Essentials SUN FLUID Tender Coconut Water with Turmeric & Basil Leaf SPF 50

  • Applied Ubtan  once a week! 

Ubtan recipe 

  1. 2 tablespoon chickpea powder (besan),
  2. ½ tablespoon turmeric powder (Haldi),
  3. 1 tablespoon sandalwood powder (Optional)
  4. Lemon juice (Optional)
  5. Yogurt or rose water

Mix all the ingredients to make a smooth paste, apply evenly on your face and neck. wash it off after 20 minutes with Luke warm water.
